Gaviiformes - Loons

Classification

 Phylum: Chordata
 Class: Aves
 Order: Gaviiformes

LoonThere is one family in this order with five species of loon. Loons are duck-sized birds with long necks; webbed feet; and sharp, pointed bills. Loons have gray, black, and white feathers.

Loons are found in North America and Northern Europe and Asia. They are diving birds and eat fish. Their bones are denser than the bones of other birds, which helps them dive!

Loons breed on freshwater lakes, but they winter on the coast. Loon pairs often mate for life and they can live as long as 30 years.
