Brassicaceae - Mustard Family

garlic mustardThere are about 3,500 species of trees, herbs, and shrubs in this family. The flowers on plants in this family have four petals that form a cross. Plants in this family are found throughout the world in temperate regions. Many of the species in this family are native to the Mediterranean region.

   
Alpine PennycressMany of the species in this family are used for food including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collards, and brussel sprouts. Other plants include mustard, horseradish, turnips, rutabaga, and radishes. Plants in this family found in New Hampshire include: yellowrocket, hoary alyssum, field mustard, American searocket, shepherd's purse, alpine bittercress, tansymustard, pepperweed, watercress, wild radish, and alpine pennycress.
