These birds in this order are small to medium in size and have big heads and small feet with three front toes that are joined for at least part of their length! Many species in this order are very colorful and have unique bills.
They nest in tree cavities or in ground burrows and eat fruits, vertebrates, and invertebrates. Male and female pairs mate for more than one season in most species.
While most of the species in this order are found in Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe, there are some species found in North and South America.
