There are over 2,500 species in this order and over 32 species in North America. Most species in this order are found in the tropics. Species in this order all have one thing in common - they are masters of disguise! They are masters at cryptic coloration. Species that exhibit cryptic coloration look so much like their surroundings that they seen to disappear! Walking sticks look like twigs and sticks. This protects them from predators. Most species of walking stick have no wings or small, non-functioning wings. Walking sticks move slowly, so they don't attract predators. The species in this order are herbivores. |
